Why Microsoft?

Hits by operating systemNot

Edited on 12/10 to add that little graphic.

Not going to take sides in the battle. Just going to point out that you don’t see a lot of Inuit peoples in swimming trunks. Microsoft makes products for the uneducated masses. Including me. We use MS operating systems because they are easy to use. True that tech types will more than 90 percent of the time come down on the other side of the fence. The non-tech types will more than 90 percent come down on the Redmond side of the fence. And that makes for a pretty big market. Then there is the little stuff like Microsoft donating many million dollars worth of their products to non-profits and schools. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation… The Information Superhighway is littered with the corpses of tech types that tried to buck the Microsoft system. When I destroyed our entire website because I tried to change file name extensions I wished that there would have been that little window come up that said: “Are you sure you want to do that? Because if you do it, if you push yes, your entire website will be vaporized into the etherrealm and you will be kicking yourself in the ass for weeks while you struggle to try to recreate your Picasso with rat hair tied to a tent stake.” I like those kind of challenges.

Pike County Man Electrocuted While Attempting to Steal Copper

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Gregory Blankenship, 27, of Majestic was killed Wednesday evening in the small Mingo County community of Vulcan. According to the West Virginia State Police, Blankenship climbed a telephone pole in an attempt to steal copper. The Pike Countian slipped and fell on an active line. That is when Blankenship was zapped with 74,000 volts of electric current. Blankenship was pronounced dead by the Mingo County Coroner.

Shocking news.

I Wonder…

Helmet Head

Monday, November 26th, 2007

So Trent Lott announced that he is going to retire from congress “Before the end of the year.” No doubt he will receive a very lucrative retirement package on the taxpayers dime, and by retiring now he only has to wait one year before he can “officially” begin lobbying his former colleagues, an occupation that will make him millions of dollars a year. If he retired on or after December 31st, he would have to wait two years.

I’ve never liked him. It’s unnatural the way his hair is exactly the same day after day, week after week, year after year.

Is that a politician thing? Having the same hair all the time? Who does that besides politicians and game show hosts?

Nobody else, that’s who.

Well. OK. Add Jon Kitna to that list. But nobody else.

Constitutional Crisis

There are some people that I would take a bullet for. There are some things I would take a bullet for. The Constitution is one of those things.

Dorin’s Rants

Monday, November 19th, 2007

What is up with the media? It was probably never true of course but I grew up believing if it was in black and white it had to be right. When Walter Cronkite looked you in the eye and said “that’s the way it is (day and date)” it had to be right. Walter would not lie!

Now it seems that the truth has very little to do with reporting. The News is driven by corporations that have an agenda. How many warm fuzzy stories have been reported on over the past week, month? I have a friend at work, I’ll just call him “Steve” who swears his mother died scared to death because she kept her TV on Fox News Channel, I don’t know if it’s true or not, I wonder if the Alzheimer’s made her forget how to use the remote? I’ve watched Fox News Channel, no spin zone my ass. I didn’t fall off the turnip truck this morning folks. CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN or Headline News I don’t care they all have an agenda in my opinion.

We all get unsolicited e-mails that have been forwarded about a half dozen times claiming this or that. I recently received one with that included pictures of Denzel Washington at a base in Texas. I don’t know that it is true or is not true, but according to this e-mail Denzel put his money where his mouth is and coughed up a check for the entire amount to build a home so soldiers families have a place to stay on base while their loved one is recovering, apparently this is the best military facility to treat burn victims. I hope it is true, but as a person who avidly watches the news nightly I find it hard to believe I would miss this story and in my opinion this is a real news story that bears mentioning. Why would all the news affiliations fail to at least mention it? What is up with the media?

Suicide Epidemic Among Veterans

Friday, November 16th, 2007

An excellent report by CBS News.  Please take a few minutes and look over all of the information CBS News has included in that page.

Not surprisingly, the VA reacted with this press release:

November 14, 2007

Statement on CBS News Stories Aired November 13 and 14

WASHINGTON –  Every suicide in America is a tragedy.  VA cares about each veteran and their physical and mental health.  We have  more than 10,000 mental health workers who have dedicated themselves to helping veterans cope with the issues and crises they face.  We operate a veteran suicide hotline which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to help any veteran in need.  That number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).  VA has suicide prevention coordinators at each of our VA Medical Centers.

VA strongly encourages veterans who may be considering harming themselves in some way to seek treatment from VA or other health care providers in their communities.  Our people are there to help during a crisis.  VA’s care and treatment works and is available for veterans with PTSD, depression and other mental health problems.

VA operates the largest mental health care system in the country, spending $3 billion each year on its mental health programs, and has taken several measures to increase its mental health services in recent years.  Those include new programs bringing mental health into primary care, intensified rehabilitation for those with serious mental illnesses, and expanded programs for homeless veterans and those with substance abuse problems.

VA is concerned that the data CBS presented in its broadcast was not reviewed by independent scientists as most legitimate academic studies are.  Regardless of this questionable journalistic tactic, VA takes the problem of suicide very seriously and wants veterans to come to VA for help if they are under stress or in crisis.

VA is constantly reviewing scientific findings, both from our own research and that of others, to guide us in improving care for veterans.  We are reviewing the limited information that CBS has made available to us and are accelerating our own research to ensure we are doing everything possible to improve the information available to the medical and research communities about suicides in veterans as a means of better understanding how to prevent these tragedies.

The VA has a propaganda machine that is second to none.  It rivals the propaganda machine of the old Soviet Union.
